Visiting Artist: Edra Soto
Our first visiting artist was Edra Soto, a Pueto Rican artist whose work is rooted in understanding the world through simple shapes, installations and public artworks. She often draws inspiration from her culture, childhood and religious upbringing.
Edra then led a workshop about milagros, a traditional Mexican votive folk charm often used for healing or offerings. For her 2005 exhibition "Documentation 2004: A Year in Review / Ornamentos", Edra created hundreds of milagros traced from images found in daily newspapers such as El Nueva Dia in Puerto Rico and the Chicago Sun Times. Using tooling foil and a stylus, students created their own milagros inspired by artworks from the MCA's collection.
