Rafael Vera: vernacular home

Rafael Vera  took us through his artistic career and process with lots of visuals and anectdotes. It was helpful to see what kind of artwork he was making as a 1st year art student in college all the way up until now.

Rafael's classroom challenge for us is probably very similar to how he might begin his own drawings. First, students were to take many photos of their home as visual references. Rafael is greatly influence by his own house, both the physical and emotional aspects. Some of the student photos are are defintely artwork on their own, but this is just the first step of the challenge!

Once students had their photos, they were to pick their favorite to mentally or physically cut an element out of the composition. Once this "cut" was made, students were to arrange a composition, allowing their element(s) to float on the paper. The negative space (the empty space) was to become a very important aspect of the piece.

Much like the other challenges in this entire artist series, students' artwork began to change in new ways after the challenge, this time utlizing the space on their paper in new and unique ways for each artist.
